Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise in her early years. Aunt Denise was a nurse who worked night shifts so that she could commit her day to art literature as well as theater, among other things. She showed DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay discovered a love for it. DuVernay realized through the example of her mother that art was an effective tool for social change. DuVernay was raised by parents who were knowledgeable about society and taught her how she could use the arts as a means of expressing herself. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and was raised. Her father, who was DuVernay's dad, reminisced historical civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the close-by city of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summers that DuVernay was inspired her later to direct a movie that focused on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at in the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with diplomas in English and African American studies. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was in the college. She began as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was asked to investigate the waste at the home of a member of the jury. Her disappointment was evident in her journalism duties, and decided to change to the field of public relations. DuVernay began her work as a junior public relations assistant for a film studio that was small following her graduation from college. In this role, she launched her own firm of public relations named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition, she started various promotion and lifestyle networks for the urban beauty industry, including the Urban Beauty Collective.
